Installing and configuring

Block Use Stats

Installation

This block installs using the standard plugin install process:

  1. Unzip the archive in the /blocks directory of your moodle implementation
  2. Browse to the Site Administration / Notification screen to finish install.

Configuration

The Use Stats block has several tuning parameters that may impact significantly the final time calculation result. You may have to qualify the way your users will mainly use moodle to choose accurate values for tuning.

Actually, the component assumes some corrective actions when detecting a possible but non explicit session break, in order to help reflecting more accurately the reality. You have to choose both key values for:

  • The max admissible gap over wich the block can assume the user was deconnected.
  • The time bonus agreed on the last event of the implicit session.

Tuning both parameters depends on:

  • Is your content very granular and needing learners to browse frequently in moodle
  • Is the work organised to favour long working sessions rather than a lot of short ones.

Global settings

From When (default time) Possible values : 5, 15, 30, 60, 90, 180, 365 When no value is given, will default to the smallest possible range (last 5 days).

Filter time display under

When displaying each course separate session time, axtivating this will filter time amounts under this threshold to clarify the display. A small signal is added to tell that all time spent entries have not been displayed.

Display activity time only

When working in a moodle driven learning content environment, you may spend your time in three major locations : the learning actitvities proposed in the course, the general places of the course (but not in specific activities), other locations that have been visited during the session but that cannot be affected to the course context.

This setting will let you choose if the reference time is the only “activity” time, or a wider time register that counts activity and overal course workspaces.

Threshold

the time gap threshold over which the session will be considered as disrupted. The use_stats module will add a standard “end of session” compensation time. The inactivity of a user is perceived directly from his own log track, when two consequent log tracks exceed the threshold value. This generates an “implicit disconnection event” in the time track for this user.

Note that some activities, media or resources may axtivate this situation (f.e a long video to watch into an external untracked player).

Extra credit on disconnection (last ping credit)

This is the extra time (in min) that will be added to each implicit disconnection event that is found in the user's time track.

15 mn assumed work time is given as a default value.

Display “Other time”

“Other time” are time counts collected when the user is brwosing pages that cannot be affected eexplicitely to some course. This is the case with screens in the “user profile” section, or other sections that are attached to more general contexts in Moodle.

Display activity time eonly

This switch will restrict the Use_Stats to give only time explictely spent in moodle activities (course modules).

One session per course

When enabled, the session count will be affected when a user's learning session changes the course context. A new working session will be counted each time a course context is entered from outside. If not enabled, the “session” concept will run from the “login” event up to any disconnection event (implicit or explicit).
